1-18.

No one has ever seen God;

the only God, who is at the Father's side,

he has made him known.

1-19.

And this is the testimony of John,

when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,

"Who are you?"

1-20.

He confessed, and he did not deny,

but confessed, "I am not the Christ."

1-21.

And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?"

He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?"

And he answered, "No."

* Elijah : 솔로몬 이후 북부(이스라엘 왕조)와 남부(유다 왕조)로 나뉨. 이스라엘 왕조의 오므리 왕 -> 아합 왕 때 Elijah가 활약함. 선지자.

* the Prophet : (모세 같은) 선지자.

1-22.

They said to him then, "Who are you?

Let us have an answer for those who sent us.

What do you say about yourself?"

1-23.

He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wildness,

'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said."

1-24.

(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)

* Pharisees : 바리새인. 유대교를 대중화 시킨 사람들. 생략 된 바리새인들도 있었다는 성서의 주석.

1-25.

They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing,

if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"

1-26.

John answered them, "I baptize with water,

but among you stands one whom you do not know,

1-27.

even he the who comes after me,

the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."
